Labourers work on the construction of a fence on the border between Israel and Egypt

Labourers work on the construction of a fence on the border between Israel and Egypt, some 70 kilometres north of the southern city of Eilat March 1, 2011. Alarmed by what it described as a near-doubling in the influx of Africans seeking work or claiming refugee status, Israel last year began erecting a fence along the frontier and announced plans to build an internment camp for border-jumpers. Israel’s Defence Minister Ehud Barak said on Tuesday that work on the fence was being sped up in order to curb illegal migration and that Israel was on «high alert» along its Egyptian border.
